Xero has launched a live integration with Anthropic's Claude, connecting Xero's financial data and tools with the AI assistant.

The move gives Xero customers with active subscriptions access to their financial data inside Claude conversations, while also bringing Claude into Xero's software environment. Users can ask for information such as cash position, overdue invoices, and profit trends without switching between tools.

The integration is available to Xero's more than 4.5 million subscribers in over 180 countries. It is designed for small businesses and their advisers, allowing them to pull live financial information into discussions about operations and strategy.

Instead of relying on static file exports, the system uses live data from Xero and provides links back to the accounting platform for follow-up action. That could include reviewing a full report, checking a contact record, or opening invoice details inside Xero after a query in Claude.

How it works

Customers can use the integration to examine revenue and profit, review contacts and receivables, and check financial position and cash flow. In practice, that means asking Claude whether profit is rising or falling, which customers account for the most revenue, or which invoices remain unpaid.

Xero said the same underlying architecture used by its JAX financial analysis tool supports the Claude integration. It added that a reusable design approach helped bring the service to market soon after the two companies agreed a multi-year partnership.

The release is part of a broader push by software providers to place accounting and finance data inside general-purpose AI assistants already used in daily work. For small businesses, the appeal is the ability to get answers from financial systems in conversational form instead of manually navigating reports and dashboards.

The shift also puts greater emphasis on data governance. Xero said financial data shared between the two platforms is used only for a user's specific session and that proprietary business data is not used to train Claude's AI models.

Executive view

Diya Jolly, Chief Product & Technology Officer at Xero, said the company expects AI assistants to become a regular part of customers' working environment.

"AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of our customers' workspace, and to be effective, that workspace requires Xero's trusted financial intelligence as its foundation," Jolly said.

"Delivering this financial context within Claude bridges the gap between the everyday AI tools customers use and Xero's rich financial data. When customers engage in wide-ranging conversations with Claude about their business strategy or day-to-day operations, they can now use Claude to instantly pull up their cash position, check overdue invoices, or see how profit is tracking, all without breaking their flow of work. That's what it means to have Xero wherever you work, and it's part of our commitment to ensuring customers can leverage Xero at every point in their decision-making process," she added.

The partnership reflects a broader competitive shift in business software as vendors seek to make their data accessible through AI interfaces as well as traditional applications. Accounting groups, in particular, are trying to position themselves as a source of current business data that can inform decisions made through external AI tools.

For Xero, which has built its position in cloud accounting for small businesses, the link with Anthropic extends that strategy beyond bookkeeping tasks into broader business questioning. Customers can use the integration to surface strategic financial insight while staying inside Claude.

Xero also framed the launch around responsible data use, saying the arrangement is built on its existing approach to accountable AI. Session-based access to financial information is a core part of how the service operates, with customer data restricted to the task at hand rather than fed back into model training.

The integration allows Xero customers to work with their financial data directly inside Claude while keeping a path back to source records in Xero for action on reports, contacts, and invoices.
